Life After Stroke Award winners announced
A host of celebrities join forces with the Stroke Association on Thursday 12 June to honour the courage and dedication shown by stroke survivors, carers, volunteers and health professionals.
The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards will be presented to 10 winners by an array of well-known names, including star of stage and screen Tamsin Greig, former Dragon Hilary Devey, and BBC broadcaster Andrew Marr.
The Stroke Association’s Life After Stroke Awards, sponsored by TONI&GUY Charitable Foundation, recognise the courage shown by stroke survivors and carers as well as the great work and commitment shown by health professionals, groups and supporter organisations.
Winners range from 13-year-old Cheyenne McLaughlin, who cares for her little sister Cailtin, who had stroke hours before she was born, to 65-year-old James Cho, who has made a recovery from four severe strokes.
The 2014 Life After Stroke Award winners are:
- Carer Award: Cheyenne McLaughlin, 13, from Isleworth, London
- Children & Young People’s Courage Award Hannah Garrity,14, from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
- Adult Courage Award (18-64): Angharad Lloyd-Thomas, 21, from Camarthen, Wales
- Volunteer Award: Sarah Scott, 23, from Welwyn, Hertfordshire
- Professional Excellence Award: Melissa Peters, 32, from Farnborough, Hampshire
- Fundraiser of the Year Award: Amanda Morris, 40, from Halifax, Yorkshire
- Creative Arts Award: Pieter Egriega, 55, from Macclesfield, Cheshire
- Adult Courage Award (65+): James Cho, 65, from Epson, Surrey
- Stroke Group Award: Burton and District Stroke Club
- Special Recognition Award: Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland
Jon Barrick, Stroke Association Chief Executive, commented: “A stroke happens in an instant and often changes lives forever. The Life After Stroke Awards highlight the tremendous courage people have shown in rebuilding their lives after a stroke, or in helping others to do the same.
“We believe in life after stroke and are leading a community to change the world for people affected by this devastating condition.”

A stroke is a brain attack which happens when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, caused by a clot or bleeding in the brain.
